What is the best way to shoot outdoor portraits (head-shots) on a Nikon D5000?
I am going to shoot my friend in Central Park this Fall as the leaves are all turning and just before Winter descends upon us. I have a Nikon D5000 Digital SLR. I am looking for hints and suggestions as to how I may better master my equipment in order to capture the moment. I know that is broad, but basically It will be an outdoor head-shot session so if you can think in those regards any help would be welcomed. Thanks.
Shoot with your friend in the shade to reduce harsh shadows and have them face a way from the bright sun to help them avoid squinting.
Set your cameras white balance to shade and use a lens that is at least 50 mm. Shorter lenses will cause distortion of their facial features.
Your 18-55 mm lens set at from 50 to 55 mm will work just fine
If you focus on their eyeball, the depth of field, one third forward and two thirds back will bring their face in focus from nose to ear if you choose the right aperture. Usually f/8 or f/11 is the sharpest aperture and will also pull enough depth of field
