Polk Audio Boat Tower Speakers not working?
I just recently bought a used Super Air Nautique 230 with just under 100 hours. It has four tower speakers and a 12" sub custom installed from the previous owner. Today i was listening to the sound system and I noticed that two of the tower speakers were not working. I check the connections at the amp and they were connected. I am getting sound out of the stock sound system as well as the sub, but only two of the four tower speakers are working. Any ideas??
You either have a blown channel in the amp or the speakers are gone. Test the speakers first. With everything off, disconnect the speakers in question. Use a 1.5 volt "D" size battery and some wire to span the connections. Attach the wires to the +/- on the speaker and tap one end of the wires to the battery. The cone should move in or out (depends on polarity but not important). You want the cone to move. If it doesn't, the voice coil is shot. If the cone moves, it's good. Now if the speakers check out, you'll need to pull the amp to have it tested at a Car Audio shop. There are all sorts of reason for the sound system to fail on a boat. Boats encounter conditions that a car will never see. Moisture, humidity, pounding waves, vibrations, water splash, salt spray, etc. Then there could be unseen pinch points that short the wiring, or cut it.
Back in '90, I owned an Car Audio/ Electronics store and we were all Certified for installations and electronic repairs. We did boats and it's very different than a car. If this was a "Factory" system, take it back to the boat dealer to troubleshoot and repair. You messing with it could void the warranty if there's still one in place.
