A Look At Some Of The Newest Wireless Audio Devices
Newest wireless audio gizmos such as iPods, wireless headphones and cell phones support newest wireless protocols. These protocols are supposed to eliminate the cord and deliver perfect high-fidelity audio. I will take a look at a few of the most recent gizmos and technologies to discover how well they work and in which conditions they operate best.
Products can be categorized into devices with built-in and those with optional wireless ability. Streaming audio products will often have a plug-in slot for adding a wireless LAN card. Most recent touch-screen iPods and iPhones already have WiFi and Bluetooth built in.
Bluetooth is fairly widespread as a low-cost wireless option. Nonetheless, Bluetooth does have some pitfalls. These weaknesses are frequently overlooked but will have an impact on high-quality audio applications.
1) Inadequate range
Bluetooth generally just offers a 30 foot range. This is enough for single-room applications. However, this limiting factor does not allow multi-room streaming using Bluetooth.
2) Audio compression resulting from limited data rate
Bluetooth provides a maximum reliable data rate of roughly 1 Mbps only. This rate is not large enough to transmit uncompressed CD-quality audio. Therefore Bluetooth wireless devices apply audio compression. The audio will be degraded to some extent due to the audio compression. For this reason higher-end audio equipment usually does not use Bluetooth wireless audio.
3) Signal latency
The signal transmitted via Bluetooth will undergo a small delay of at least 10 ms. This is for the most part attributable to the audio compression. While being uncritical for MP3 players, this delay may be a dilemma for video and other real-time applications.
4) Lacking multi-headphone support
Bluetooth is fairly restricted in terms of supporting streaming to several headphones. Streaming to multiple headphones is useful for several people wanting to listen to the same transmitter. This is less of a dilemma for MP3 player applications.
Another widespread protocol is WiFi which supports uncompressed audio but also has problems simultaneously streaming to numerous receivers. As a result of the high availability, WiFi is convenient for streaming audio from a PC. Yet, WiFi products have rather high power consumption. For this reason wireless headphones generally do not use this technology.
Home wireless speaker devices and wireless amplifiers normally use proprietary protocols. These protocols are especially engineered for real-time audio applications. Yet, low-cost wireless speakers and headphones still use FM transmission. FM transmission suffers from rather high audio deterioration and hiss / static.
More recent wireless audio protocols are based on digital transmission. This avoids audio degradation. Several protocols also incorporate error correction to deal with interference from other wireless devices.
Newest-generation wireless amplifiers allow streaming to an infinite number of receivers and support uncompressed audio transmission.
The audio latency of these wireless amplifiers is typically between 1 ms and 20 ms. A small-latency amplifier is essential for home theater audio. This ensures that all speakers will be in sync. Usually newer generation wireless audio transmitters will work at 2.4 GHz. Some transmitter products, such as Amphony's line of devices, operate at the less crowded 5.8 GHz frequency band.
These wireless amplifiers also differ regarding amplifier output power, standby power consumption and audio quality. A high-quality audio amplifier is fundamental for optimal sound quality. Digital amplifiers typically offer a power efficiency of at least 80% and standby power consumption of less than 5 Watts which keeps them cool during operation and helps save energy. However, some Class-D amps have relatively high audio distortion. Audiophile wireless amplifiers offer an audio distortion of 0.05% or less.
