Recent Accessories Make Building Multi-Channel Audio Kits A Snap
The process of setting up multi-channel audio speakers in home theater products is relatively tedious and vendors have invented new products and technologies such as wireless surround sound speakers or surround sound wireless headphones recently to help simplify the installation. I will look at several of the products and technologies that have emerged and give some advice about selecting appropriate components for a hassle-free installation.
Whilst in the past setting up a TV has been fairly easy, the appearance of multi-channel audio has made setting up home theater systems much more challenging by requiring a number of external speakers to create surround sound. In case of 5.1 surround, 6 speakers are utilized: center, left and right front, left and right rear and a subwoofer. Newer 7.1 systems require a total amount of 8 speakers by adding 2 additional side speakers.
Consequently installing a home theater has turn out to be pretty intricate and long speaker cable runs are normally undesirable for aesthetic reasons. Several technologies have emerged to simplify this process.
The first approach is referred to as virtual surround sound. This technique will take the audio components which would typically be broadcast by the remote speakers. Consequently virtual surround will not work equally well for everybody.
An additional approach for avoiding long speaker cord runs is to use wireless surround sound kits or wireless speakers. A wireless kit includes a transmitter and one or several wireless amplifiers. The transmitter connects to the source. The wireless amplifiers connect to the remote loudspeakers. The transmitter will normally come with amplified speaker inputs and line-level inputs and have a volume control to adjust it to the source audio level.
Some wireless products come with wireless amplifiers that connect to two loudspeakers. This still requires wire runs between the two loudspeakers. Other products offer individual wireless amplifiers for each speaker. The most sophisticated wireless kits use digital transmission to eliminate signal degradation. To be certain that all loudspeakers are in sync in a multi-channel application, make sure that you select a wireless system which has an audio latency of a few milliseconds at most. If the latency is higher than 10 ms then there will be an echo effect which will deteriorate the surround sound. Wireless kits often utilize the 900 MHz or 2.4 GHz frequency band. Some products also use the 5.8 GHz band. These products have less competition from other wireless gadgets than devices using the crowded 900 MHz or 2.4 GHz bands.
A third technology uses side-reflecting loudspeakers. This solution is called sound bars. The sound that would normally be sent by the remote loudspeakers is instead broadcast by loudspeakers at the front. These front speakers broadcast the sound at an angle. Then the sound is reflected by the side and rear walls and appears to be originating from besides or behind the viewer. The effect heavily is dependent upon the interior, particularly the shape of the room and the decoration. It will function well for square rooms with no obstacles and sound reflecting walls. However, realistic scenarios often will differ from this ideal and reduce the result of this solution.
