What capacitors do i need to make a speaker just play mid range?
this is for a house speaker i need a passive crossover,I think its a mix between a coil from the low pass and a capacitor from the high? not sure really but can anyone tell me the exact capacitor and coil to buy?
You are right about needing a capacitor and a coil to only get a certain frequency. Midrange in this case. You can pick up passive crossovers high and low at radio shack/curcuit city or you local electronic tech shop. A coil will cut out the highs that you don't want ( low pass filter )and a capacitor will cut out the lows that you don't want ( high pass filter ). As far as coils go for cutting out the highs I am not sure what size coil you will need but I am sure that it on the package when you buy it. As far as caps go for cutting ou lows I can indeed tell you what "farad" you will need IMO, allthough the choice of the cut off frequency will ultimately be up to you. Now you said that this will be for a house speaker. Most house speakers are 8 ohms so keep that in mind when finding the right cap. Also mid range is aboiut 300-5000 hz so I would get a cap that is 33 micro farad ( uf ). That will cut out everything below 400 hz. Also keep in mind that when you use a cap the cut off point is not right away as it will tapper off a bit hence the 400 hz and not 300 hz cap. So you will still hear down to about 300 but it will be tappered off ( more quiet ). I would just put on a cap inline on your positve speaker wire and not use a coil to cut out highs but that is up to you. Good luck on this and I hope I have helped.
