Expressor 3.1 Integrated Source Control
expressor 3.1 will become available in late February 2011. This article describes the integrated source control features that are included in 3.1.
expressor 3.1 marks the first availability of the expressor 3 Standard Edition which includes the standalone version of the expressor Data Processing Engine and Repository. This posting will focus on the Repository.
The expressor Repository is a fully-functional revision control system based on the open source standard Subversion. Within the Studio, users will be able to create "Repository Workspaces" which are just like the "Standalone Workspaces" but have the additional capability of being fully managed source artifacts with an expressor Repository. The Repository will support a wide variety of bread-and-butter source control operations including branching, locking, conflict resolution, access to revision history, and all of these operations are directly integrated into the Studio's Workspace Explorer. This means that as you continue to use the Studio to develop your projects and libraries, you will be able to safely share and manage this work with other team members using a diehard revision control system.
Administrators will appreciate the simple management of the Repository server. Installation is trivial and the product is fairly lightweight. It does not require any technology pre-requisites other than a Windows Server with ample disk space to store project artifacts and history (formal system requirements will be included in final product documentation but please inquire ahead of time). The Repository may be deployed as a Windows Service or through the command-line. Security management is straightforward as you can manage user credentials via the server's default file-based mechanism. Finally, a backup/restore utility will be available to ensure that you have the tools necessary to safely protect your work in the event of unforeseen hardware or system failures.
