What does impedance mean (in easy to understand terms)? How does it affect the quality of a pair of earphones?
I want a nice pair of good quality earphones and when I was looking at some they had different numbers for "impedance". I want to know what this is and how it affects the sound so I can get the best pair.
Impedance is the opposition to the flow of an alternating current, it is like resistance accept it changes with frequency, and is comprised of not only resistance but also capacitance and inductance. To get the best sound the impedance of your headphones should match the impedance of the output they are plugged into. When they match you get the maximum power transfer and when they don't match less power gets through.A low impedance circuit will have high current and low voltage while a high impedance circuit will have higher voltage and lower current.
