Information For Getting The Ideal Audio Amplifier
If you have paid a good deal of money on a pair of good-quality loudspeakers, you wish to be certain that you get an audio amplifier that will deliver excellent audio quality while meeting your budget. I will give several pointers about audio amp technologies to help you make the correct buying decision.
There is a flood of different audio amps available that all differ in their specifications, shape and size. On the other hand, you don't need to be a guru to pick the perfect model. By following some key rules you won't regret your buying decision.
Amplifiers vary in their size and range from types that will take up a good part of your living room while several of the most recent mini amplifier types are as tiny as a deck of cards. A lot of amps are rack sized. This allows them to be stacked on top of your other audio equipment.
Nearly all of modern audio amplifiers are based on solid-state technology whilst a tiny part is based on tube technology which has been popular over a decade ago. However, tube amplifiers have rather high audio distortion. Audio distortion refers to how much the audio signal is being degraded while passing through the amplifier and is given in percent. This value is often used when comparing the audio quality of amplifiers.
An audio distortion of up to 10% is normal for tube amps whereas solid-state amps have lower audio distortion depending on the specific technology. Amps based on any of these technologies are also known as "analog amplifiers". Whereas amplifiers utilizing these technologies generally have low audio distortion, power efficiency is only 10% to 30%. Power efficiency refers to how much of the electrical power is actually used to amplify the signal. The left over part is wasted as heat. An amp with low power efficiency will radiate most of its power as heat.
Another technology is named "Class-D". This technology provides far higher power efficiency than analog amplifiers, typically around 80 to 90%. "Class-D" amps are also called "digital amplifiers". As a result of the switching output stage, digital amplifiers normally have larger harmonic distortion than analog amplifiers. However, a number of of the newest types are able to lower distortion to 0.05% and less by utilizing a feedback mechanism.
The amp should be able to deliver adequate output power to sufficiently drive your loudspeakers which will depend not only on how much power your loudspeakers can handle but also on the size of your listening area. There are two values for speaker power handling: peak and average power handling. The peak value indicates how much power the speaker can tolerate for short periods of time. The average value on the other hand denotes how much power the speaker can tolerate constantly without harm.
If you have a rather small listening area then 20 to 50 Watts of power should be sufficient although your loudspeaker may be rated for 100 Watts or more. Speakers on the other hand differ in their impedance and sensitivity. As a rule of thumb speakers with low impedance offer higher sensitivity. High-sensitivity speakers are simpler to drive to high volume than low-sensitivity loudspeakers. Be certain that your amplifier can drive your speaker impedance. You can easily find the rated speaker impedance range in your amplifier’s user manual.
Two other important parameters to look at when selecting an amp are signal-to-noise ratio and frequency response. Signal-to-noise ratio describes how much noise the amplifier will introduce and should be at least 100 dB for a high-quality amplifier. The frequency response reveals which audio frequency range the amp covers and should be no less than 20 Hz to 20 kHz.
