How much better is a 1/2 wave antenna to a 1/4 wave antenna?
I have a 9dbi "rubby ducky" antenna and am thinking about replacing it with a 8.5dbi omni antenna found here http://www.data-alliance.net/-strse-142/Antenna-8.5dBi-omni-Wireless/Detail.bok
Because the 2nd antenna is 1/2 wave am I going to notice a performance/range increase?
Or would I be better off getting a cheaper, but higher dbi antenna like the one found here. http://www.8starshop.com/en/24g-16dbi-sma-female-wifi-lan-omni-antenna-for-router.html
I understand the higher the better. But I thought "rubber ducky" antennas are the lowest quality type you can get and therefore are not preferred.
The 1/4 wave antenna is superior. Half wave antennas do not radiate well because of the lobe location. 5/8 wave vertical antennas radiate well and have a higher field angle. The 1/4 wave has a low field angle. If you want to communicate through a mountain-top repeater, the 5/8 wave is the best. If you want to communicate horizontally close to the ground, like from car to car, the 1/4 wave wins.
