Server Rack Cabinets: The Top Three Things to Consider Before You Buy
Server racks are metal enclosures designed to hold electronic equipment including computers, monitors, servers, patch panels, KVM switches, and other network equipment. Often regarded as just office furniture outside of an IT organization, server rack cabinets play a vital part in network design, space planning, and security. Often, server racks are a very crucial expenditure a company can make given the fact that server racks house expensive hardware containing sensitive customer data and intellectual property.
There are three considerations that are often overlooked by IT staff or purchasers when buying server rack cabinets for computer and networking equipment.
1) Size
When considering a server rack for your network facility, consider the size and dimensions along with its practical usage, i.e. allowing extra space in front and behind the equipment mounted inside the cabinet or rack if the equipment requires a cable hook-up. You also want to consider allowing additional space for your cables, power cables, or power strip. Make sure you have the space required to accommodate the rack or cabinet at your facility.
2) Features
Your server racks or cabinets should have sufficient openings to allow easy access to equipment for maintenance purposes. Other features to consider are cooling and ventilation of your equipment to prevent overheating, especially servers and other equipment that have a tendency to generate heat while operating. Purchasing a cooling system will improve ventilation. Additional features that should be considered are optional accessories such as: 19" power distribution units, shelving, cable management, 19" mountable lighting, and mounting kit hardware for your equipment installation.
3) Quality, Stability, and Protection
Quality server racks will have a welded construction that will improve the sturdiness and stability. A well designed and constructed server rack will allow a large load capacity. Given the sensitive nature of the information stored inside server racks, it is essential to choose a high quality rack or cabinet. It is important to choose a sturdy, well constructed rack. Some server racks are equipped with extendable legs to support equipment weight and the rack's stability, preventing the rack from tilting when pulling equipment for maintenance. Another thing to consider is the lockable mechanism of your rack, side panels, and rear door to ensure your equipment is properly stored and secure.
