C414 History & Range
While the AKG C414 condenser microphone has been around since 1971 with the introduction of the C 414 comb, its origins actually go back to 1953 when the AKG C 12 was released. c12 microphone. While the AKG C 12 had humble beginnings with its first customer being the BBC, it has gone on to become one of the most sought-after microphones of all time.
The C 12 had two models, starting with the C 12 in ’53 then the C 12 A in ’62, the change of model designation to C 414 came with the introduction of solid-state technology and also permitted phantom powering instead of requiring an external supply. akg c414 uls. Chronology
To give you a better break down, here is the chronological order of events:
1953 – C 12 – The brand-new C 12 was release and would go on to set a new benchmark.
1962 – C 12 A – The C 12 A had a Nuvistor tube in its preamp section and its miniaturized housing would become a trademark of AKG’s large-diaphragm microphones.
1971 – C 414 comb – This model had a special module with a permanently-attached cable, but was a solid-state design.
1976 – C 414 EB – The 3-pin XLR-type is introduced.
1980 – C 414 EB-P48 – With the standardizing of 48 V phantom power lower self-noise, improved sensitivity and headroom was made possible.
1986 – C 414 B-ULS – The first transformerless version of the C 414 brought with it maximum signal linearity. High SPL capability and low noise made the C 414 B-ULS the most popular, longest-lived C 414 model. It was in production for 18 years.
1993 – C 414 B-TL II – More “presence” to the C 414 sound was demanded, and AKG delivered with the B-TL II.
2004 – C 414 B-XLS / C 414 B-XL II – An internal capsule elastic suspension system is used for the first time, and a 5th polar pattern is introduced; Soft Cardiod.
2009 – C 414 XLS / C 414 XL II – The latest iterations are released with nine pickup patterns, and new features that allow gain-before-feedback to be maximized and signal-bleeding from other sources to be minimized.
Current Models
Since 2009 the current models of AKG 414 microphones are the C 414 XLS & C 414 XL II.
Both mics offer nine pickup patterns, key lock (ultra handy for live-sound applications), peak hold LED display, three switchable bass cut filters and three pre-attenuation levels.
