As everyone knows, up to about 100 years ago Halloween was really only for the kids, adults Halloween costumes did not exist and there was no sign that Halloween would become as large as it is in the grown up world as it is in the kids world. These kinds of costume parties started during the french revolution period but were called masquerade balls and in no way linked to the pagan celebration of Halloween. The masquerade ball started within the french aristocracy as a way for them to still go out and enjoy themselves but be totally anonymous by wearing a mask. Anonymity was key to these aristocrats because otherwise they were in nervous about losing their heads. A nightmare that I am sure even Michael Myers would want to avoid. The most famous aristocrat to suffer this fate and lose her head in the guillotine was Marie Antoinette, the queen of France.
So basically the wearing of a mask and wig goes centuries, the actual wearing of a costume or outfit actually goes back even farther, all the way to pagan times, after all Halloween is a pagan holiday that we now utilize and changed into one of the most popular holidays in any calender year. People worshiping Halloween, druids and pagans, would not put on a ghost costume or a sexy costume at first, that came a little later as the holiday / worship day evolved in to the day of the dead.
