Studio Monitors question?!?
hey, i need some monitors for music production, but i am a student so am on a pretty tight budget and cant afford to be blowing £200+ on speakers. i was wondering if you could recommend any?
so far im considering the Edirol MA-15D - http://www.dolphinmusic.co.uk/product/5965-edirol-ma-15d-pair.html
or the Maudio BX5a - http://www.m-audio.com/products/en_us/StudiophileBX5a.html
any thoughts? i need quite small ones as i dont have much room, but of course i also want as good sound as i can get for my money. thanks
Small and monitor don't go together unless you have a few hundred to spend on the LS3/5A .
BBC uses them.
Rogers and Spendor built them and a couple of other firms.
Rogers also did excellent amplifiers, both valve and transister. One of the truly great companies in British hifi.
There are a few LS3/5A resurrections, all very pricey. Here are some second hand ones just gone on eBay for £680

If you have a Cash Converters near you, look in. Some good bargains to be had.
The Maudio might be OK, only you know if it comes up to your expected standard.
It isn't a well known name.
The other just looks like a name freak. Call it a monitor, it'll sell.
The word monitor gets mis-used, like 'profressional' does.
Good brands are Tannoy, Mordant-Short, B&W (Bowers and Wilkins), Spendor, and the happily re-opened Castle Acoustics company.
Castle are the works....they make all their own drivers and cabinets, crossovers, the lot. One of the very few firms left in UK that does that for top qualty speakers.
They design and build all their speakers from scratch, not like most firms who design cabinets and fit other firms' drivers in them.
My tiny Castle Trents are fifty years old. Superb for the size.

Track down a pair of Castle Isis....wonderful for a small speaker and really monitor quality. Here's an American review......

Headphones give much better sound than speakers for a quarter of the money. Sennheiser 580, or even 565 or similar, will surpass all bookshelf speakers. The BBC and thousands of recording studios worldwide use Sennheiser headphones.
Lots of headphone info here and more on the link in it...stereo, binaural, multichannel....I've got a love affair with speakers and 'phones...haha...and amps, tuners, turntables, recorders.....Hmmmph....

I got some old but superb B&W DM5 speakers for a tenner in an auction...find your local auction rooms. You could get a real bargain.
