How can I get my elderly cat to use a litterbox if he never used one before?
He never used one before as he just went outside to go the bathroom. Now, he hates being outside during the day because it is colder and we put him in the basement with a litter box but he still goes to the bathroom on the floor. We don't know how to get him to use it because he has never used one before.
Since your elderly cat is used to going to the bathroom outside, you COULD TRY to switch him over by........going outside and digging up some soil and putting THAT in the litter pan.........OR, go to a nursery (Home Depot, Lowe's, etc) and get a bag of "potting soil" (or cheapest bag of soil available) and use THAT until he gets used to going "IN A BOX"!!
After he gets used to using the box, get some of the Pine litter, use that for awhile, then try to switch to a scoopable litter. This may take some time, and you'll have to be really good about scooping out his poop, no matter what litter you use, because if it get too "nasty", he'll go back to using the floor.
