The Archives Lateran chapter consists of two distinct sections: the Archive Music and the Archive Lateran itself. Music Archives were combined scores of the music chapel Lateran (Pia called the Chapel after the reform carried out by Pius VI in 1784). There are well-preserved 6174 manuscripts and 146 printed volumes, which contain mainly the works of sacred music for the liturgical functions of the basilica. The Archives Lateran itself holds documents relating to the history of the chapter, along with other archival collections from religious establishments joined the chapter, in particular those of the Benedictine abbey of San Pietro di Ferentillo (tr), the Cistercian abbey of St. Our Lady of Glory of Anagni (FR), the order of Fiore, the Augustinian monastery of Bagnara (RC), and finally the French abbey of Clairac, donated to the Lateran Chapter by Henry IV in 1604.
The documents, the oldest of which dates from the year 958, were rearranged in 1763 by the great scholar Pier Luigi Galletti, who distributed them in different series, marked by one or two letters of the alphabet. During the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, scholars were unable to access the Archive regularly capitulate Lateran. Only some of them was in fact have the right to consult in their research.
