From Where Can Kefir Be Extracted From?

Even if Kefir is a rather common food, there are still a lot of people who are either new or have not been introduced to what kefir is. So what is kefir anyway and where did it come from; when did people begin using the cultures and creating different foods and beverages from it? How can cultures like these be acquired and what kind of preparation should be implemented to ensure that the outcome becomes that which is edible for humans?

 

Regardless of the term used to refer to kefir, it remains to exist as a fermented milk beverage which originated from the Caucasus region. In Persian, the word kefir is a combination of the terms kef meaning foam and shir pertaining to milk.

 

Kefir grains contain yeasts and bacteria cultures and kefir is formed when these are introduced to cow, goat, or sheep's milk. Although, traditional kefir is prepared by using skin bags and hanging them by doorways with the milk and kefir grains already inside; the logic behind this is that anyone who passes through will definitely knock the bags keeping the milk and grains regul

 

As what was earlier mentioned, kefir is loaded with a significant amount of beneficial bacteria and yeast compounds that assist the body with its normal functioning. The intertwined elements of the kefir result to its cauliflower-like appearance.

 

The lactose when fermented results to the development of a semi-sour, semi-carbonated, and alcoholic beverage; the drink's consistency reflects that of regular yogurt which is rather thin but thicker than plain milk.

 

When kefir was earlier made around the twentieth century, alcohol levels from the drink gave figures of about one to two percent. There are kefir drinks which do not resort to the usual milk base and even use water as a substitute; these other variations may also include fruits and similar additives to adjust the flavor of the kefir.

 

Kefir is a versatile ingredient in many countries, recipes, and kitchens all over the world. There are some who may want to add some fruits or honey to adjust the taste of kefir but there are some who can drink it straight up. Kefir need not remain to simply be a drink; in some countries, kefir is used for recipes such as soups and the like.

 

Kefir grains will actually work well with regard to fermenting the milk coming from most mammals namely the cow, goat, and sheep. The grains can also ferment other sugary liquids such as ginger beer, fruit juices, coconut water, and soy milk. No matter how kefir is made and where the food is used, there are plenty of ways for people to enjoy a regular consumption of kefir.
