Betta Fish Disease Diagnosis
I am not a veterinarian, and do not have any medical degree in treating Bettas. I am simply an enthusiast with over 22 years experience. While these cures have been successful on my own Betta fish for the past 20+ years, this information does not take the place of a licensed veterinarian.
There are several of Betta diseases that your Betta can be subject to. As soon as you determine that your Betta is not well, it's important to isolate the sick Betta fish so it doesn't get your other fish sick in the tank. be careful to not have an abrupt change of water by only using water that has been placed at the same temperature for a minimum of 8 hours.
Make sure not to spread any germs by cleaning your hands with an antibacterial soap after touching a diseased Betta.
It's vital to figure out the signs of illness, then medicate the sick fish.
A fit Betta should be active and swimming in the tank, while an ill one generally stays in a edge of the tank or sometimes at the bottom and may just rise for air.
Illness: Clamped Fins
Make sure to check his fins. If they are close to the Betta's body, then they may have clamped fins, which usually originates from bad water quality. It is not difficult to cure this by cleaning his water. Start replacing half his water every day until his fins are no longer clamped.
Betta Fish Illnesses - Ich
If you notice tiny white spots on its body and/or fins then it has a very serious parasite called ich. This has to be treated as soon as possible. A definite sign of Ich is if you see your Betta swimming his body against parts of the tank in order to wipe off the parasites.
Ich can happen because of changing water conditions or other stressful situation for your Betta fish. Unhappy Betta fish are significantly more prone to parasites and other sicknesses.
Illness: Fungus Contamination
Big dots of grey or white is probably a fungus infection. These dots will be larger than with Ich. If it remains untreated, it may begin to look like a fuzzy white growth.
Betta Fish Illnesses - Fin Rot
If your Betta's fin or tail appear to be rotting away, shredded at the ends, or have holes in them, then he probably has Fin or Tail Rot. Fin rot comes from a bacterial infestation and is one of the most usual ailments of a Betta. Fin rot can grow very fast to the remainder of the body, so has to be resolved immediately. In truly progressed occurances, the fins and tail can begin turn red or start to bleed.
Betta Illnesses - Constipation
Bettas do best when consuming a variety of food. Check out the Betta Feeding Manual for guidelines on what to feed your Betta fish. If you notice a protruding abdomen, but otherwise your fish is swimming like normal, then he probably is constipated.
Betta Disease - Velvet
If you notice powdery yellow dust on his scales, then he may have Velvet. It's best to use a flashlight to try to see it - it is tough to see otherwise.
Betta Illnesses - Dropsy
If your Betta has elevated scales and a protruding abdomin, he may have contracted Dropsy. For severe cases, when looking from above the scales may appear to be similar to an open pine cone.
Illness: Popeye
If you see your Betta fish's eye popping out, if it's foggy or has a bubble on top of it, then he has contracted Popeye. It is simple to spot and relatively simple to treat.
Betta Sickness - Tuburculoses
Tuberculoses is the only disease that a fish can transmit to a human, so make sure you do not have any open cuts and are not sick (with a weak immune system) prior to submerging your arm in the water, or even better put on sanitary gloves. Don't worry too much - the worst it can do to you is transmit to you an infection.
If you notice swollen or protruding scales, a loss of weight, skin defects and/or discoloration, scales falling off, little appetite, slow and tired swimming and clamped fins then he may have Tuberculosis.
