Easy Ways to Pimp Your Scalextric
Slot car racing with Scalextric is a hobby that continues to grow in popularity. Scalextric enthusiasts soon start to look for ways to enhance the performance of their cars and systems. Here are just a few simple tweaks that will help make your cars fly around the track.
You can apply the same basic principles to slot cars as they to do F1 racing cars and rally cars. To increase speed you might install a more powerful engine, lower the weight and fit better tires. Optimising Scalextric cars can be very educational.
Let's first think about the Scalextric cars engine. Your Scalextric cars don't use petrol engines, they use little electric motors that are very easy to swap out. You can find some remarkable, high perfornance Scalextric motors that provide higher revs and higher speeds. Changing the motor will immediately give you a significant improvement in speed.
Increasing your speed means that it is more likely that your car will fly off the track when it gets to a bend. You can help your car to stay on the track with an appropriately positioned magnet. Most scalextric cars are fitted with magnets but you can upgrade to a stronger one that will help to keep your car on the track.
A further enhancement is to fit a new set of tires. Improving grip will help your car to attain greater speeds.
So now you have a pimped up Scalextric car capable of incredible speeds. But what about your Scalextric track? A few simple tweaks can make all the difference. I recommend that you first try this enhancements on one of your two lanes so that you can compare the difference with the unmodified track.
Start by cleaning the Scalextric track. Dirt, dust and moisture on the track will inevitably result in low friction and maybe even some wheel spin. And the next thing to do is to clean dust and debris from your slot. The slots in your track will inevitabley gather dust and dirt. This will inevitable impede the movement of your car. Keeping your slots clean will make a lot of difference.
Don't overlook your electrical system as ensuring all your connections are as good as they can be will bring performance enhancements. Clean all the electrical connectors and make certain taht your car contacts are as clean as possible.
By now your car should be literally flying around your Scalextric track. Now you're ready to find a worthy opponent for a race.
