Norton Security is on a new laptop. Must I buy a disk in order to upgrade it to a full product?

A friend of mine has bought a new Toshiba Satellite Pro with Norton Security (anti-virus, firewall, anti-spam etc.). After about a month it has stopped working. He phoned Norton support and they told him to go and buy the disk from the shop.

I always assumed that when Norton came with a new laptop it was a time-limited version which simply required to be registered in order to become a full one. The only payment being for the annual subscription.

Has anyone else had this kind of experience: buying a brand-new Toshiba, using Norton for a while and then having to buy a new disk?

Dump Norton it doesn't work anyway, almost every computer that I have worked on has had norton or macafee they just attach themselves to every aspect of your computer and dog it. Windows has a built in firewall and if you have cable or DSL there is a hardware firewall as well just have to turn it on http://192.168.1.1
All you need is Spybot S&D (free)only download from safernetworking website do a yahoo search 2nd or 3rd one down. Install Ccleaner(www.ccleaner.com) and in the settings have it run when computer starts. With Spybot after dload check for updates and make sure you use the immunize feature it will automatically block over 15000 malicious websites, trojans, dialers etc., and it updates regularly make sure to update on a weekly basis. Lastly dload xpantispy from xpantispy.org. check the box that blocks anonimous network crawling in addition to anything else that floats your boat. I have fixed hundreds of computers and thats all I put on them without any future problems.
