Convert Color Photos To Black And White
Earlier during the time of film photography taking black and white photos was a complicated process which involved lot of processing in the dark room. This technique was used for many years since the was the basic of types photography, the black and while photos were created from the negatives anfd then they were converted to color which inturn was color transparencies.
These process was simplified a lot using digital photography were color photos can be easily converted to black and white using simple processing techniques inbuilt in the camera or using software, no need of darkroom process was required for this conversion to similar quality pictures taking one tenth of the time.
As a general rule RGB (always use RGB never sRGB if possible) images are converted to a ratio of approximately 30:60:10. The values corresponding to the equation will be 10 percent of the value in blue, 60 percent in green, and 30 percent in red. The weight of the RGB channels are broken down to black and white using complicated image processing techniques. Because there is so many variables, experience combined with a good “eye” dictates creative difference that relates directly to the image.
Keep in mind that in black & white the green colors appear the brightest, while the blue end of the spectrum appear darker. Also that conversion to the grayscale is not the same as desaturation, which reduces all colors to gray.
A standard conversion does not fit all subjects, yet the ratios mentioned above can be a starting point. The red component of the image can be brightened to obtain higher contrast in black and white images with a background composition using the green channel.
A software component called Channel Mixer is available for easy conversion of color by adjusting the ratio of the RGB components or changing the weight of the pixel component. Most of the photo process software available in the market has facilities for this conversion alternatively you can download free software that equals the quality. Although, it also can generate output to monochrome images by maximizing the adjustment to one end of its scale.
This will alter the overall exposure of the image as well, bringing the image into appropriate contrast and brightness ratios without further adjustment. With some conversion tools it is also possible to alter the balance of yellow, magenta, and cyan conversions (photo darkroom basics) for an even greater range of effects in black and white.
There is another method for conversion called toning which process the black and white images to a single tone color. This conversion is done on the cyan blue, yellow green, or gold toned images or the sepia tones. Similar types of conversion is available for toning digital images but you need better creative talents for obtaining what you need.
The first step in conversion to black and white images is the processing of RGB mode followed by toning.Reducing contrast while you brighten the shadow detail will effectively build the image into an acceptable tone gradation while obtaining better quality. Black most often remains dark and even blacker when a digital image is toned. A brightener tool is present in the software for removing the darker portion in the photos, this is done by taking out the details from the photos.
