why does a 5.1 system can run only in stereo on my sound card which even supports 7.1?
Hi I recently bought the Edifier S5.1 home theatre speaker system. I am having troubles working the key feature in it which is the 5.1 sound. I intend to use it on my pc and I have an asus p5nt deluxe motherboard with a sound card integrated on it which supports up to 7.1. So I plugged in the front speakers and then the center and sw and then the rear speakers to the motherboard from the speaker system's amp. the sound driver program I use is "sound max" the input mode on the speakers system's controller was set to 5.1 not 2.1 (not that stupid). So I was done pluging in the 3 jacks into the 3 appropriate places in the mainboard when I tried in with some music, a movie and games only the front speakers and the sub woofer was doing what it was supposed to be. the center and rear speakers were quiet. I am so annoyed. What could be the problem? help pls!!!

the other poster is correct about there only being 2 channels in most pc audio.
try putting in a dvd that has 5.1 and that might start up the extra channels on its own or you may need to change it manually.
if you have the option use an optical (toslink) cable instead of the 3 audio cables u are using right now.
an optical cable will send extra data to the reciever like channel information and the reciever will actually show up as dolby digital 5.1 isntead of just showing the number of channels being used or even not showing any information.
