I finally received my Pioneer 1019 last night. I ended up staying up way too late last night setting this up. I finally decided to buy the Pioneer 1019 after a long decision process between the Denon 1910, Onkyo 607 and Yamaha 765. I needed 4 HDMI for the first models do would not work and I have also been limited in depth so that the print was the 4. I went with the Pio because I always been a fan of the sound and quality and each of the others had one or two things wrong (not available Denon, Onkyo quality problems (?), Yammy not entered assignable). My only concern with the Pio was going to the amp redesigned and reduced weight. Would it impact the quality of sound and power? Based on my first test, NO. This unit has a great on its own, with lots of detail to low and high levels. I have not heard any hint of strain.
Design
While the device is smaller and lighter than the 1018 does not seem to `cheap 'and it is still big enough to make you think has the power. It looks great in the rack. Remote is a little confusing but I will not use the object after the configuration database and Harmony had all applicable codes, a nice surprise for such a recent publication.
The installation process
It was pretty easy to get all the speakers the components connected. The manual stinks, but I spent a good amount of time with the manual online in advance and after a few readings you can fill in the blanks. It took me about an hour to get off all the equipment old and new equipment in. Assigning inputs was relatively simple. Rename the entries was awkward because of the way they manage the entry of text, but it was very flexible. I had a little trouble to assign the optical audio from my Macbook with an HDMI input. I first tried to directly affect the optical HDMI input, but you can not do that. Instead, I had to assign both the HDMI and optical input for a name completely different (I chose DVR). It worked well, but I suspect that I really lost the means of a video input because I can not send anything whatever else the original input HDMI. Not a huge deal I do not use all the entries, but it was still annoying.
I did not MCACC again, but I use the manual configuration of the speakers and my speaker settings on my old Sony April and input those here. This was pretty easy, even with this rudimentary setup the sound was great. Even my wife (who is happy with the TV speakers only) commented on the improvement of quality.
I ran though some of the DSP and effects, but I prefer DIRECT put everything on, especially on BD, but it was nice to use the expanded stereo for my iPod and get a sound of all stakeholders.
Video
I had many questions about the video scaler. I agree with most posters that you should not buy for April 1 this capability. Most TVs do a better job than any $ 500 in April. My TV is a 2006 model and it has enough average scale, so I wanted to see how it looks. I connected the Comcast DVR with HDMI and component with optical / measuring the difference. HDMI looks good, even very good (and not to scale, of course) but there was no impact on the visual signal. I did not have audio is annoying lags. Component also seems really good for HD signals. I could not tell the difference between HDMI and component signals on HD channels.
I then tried on some SD channels with the whole 1080p scaler. The AVR is good, but it was not better than my TV. Not not worse but then I have already mentioned my scaler is pretty average. So, as I said before, do not buy the unit for zoom, but this is not a negative either. Just try your sources and television and it may or may not generate an improvement in PQ.
The good news is that it is a very good job of upscaling (switching of analog signals to digital), which means you can to have HD sources 6 (4 HDMI and Component 2) which is nice.
The only odd thing I found was in the settings for aspect ratio 4:3 for signals. The default is `through 'that would make me think that sends the signal intact but it is really to stretch the signal (and it is a poor job of that). I switched the signal to 'Normal' and then just pass the signal intact 04:03 - an improvement.
All other sources were very nice. Panny BD35 looks and sounds great and I was relieved to see that my Macbook was able to transmit a clean signal through April on television.
Audio
So the real question is how this unit sounds. As I mentioned earlier, I'm really pleased with the quality and balance. Everything sounds warm and detailed. I expect further improvement MCACC with more adjustments. I listened quite the number of units over time and it has all the noise and the quality you expect Pioneer them. I do not think anyone will be disappointed by the noise or power (Of course, if you're willing to spend 3x the $ $, then you can get a better quality of the Elite Series. If you have the budget, definitely buy one of these. If you are looking to spend <$ 700 then that's great unit.)
One thing that bothered me was the setting crossover. My sub and speakers but want a 110Hz crossover options are not so fine. I think you can set to 50, 80, 100, 150 and 200. I would have appreciated a few more options. Adjusting to 110 makes me lose the bass, 150 but I am sending signals more than is necessary for the sub. This seems ok, but most other AVRs I saw consider this setting additional details.
Movies and TV sounded really good and my speakers and sub was even a nice mix before running MCACC calibrations. The music was where I really noticed a significant improvement over older my Sony. This unit handled good movies but a little tense about the music. The Pioneer really great for music, music beautifully handled. I tried a CD, an iPod interface via USB and an iPod via the RCA inputs. CD sounds fantastic and I was pleasantly surprised by how the iPod with a USB seemed too great. When Using this configuration, the Pioneer uses the DAC quality instead of the cheapest in the iPod and this setting makes a big difference. Yet even with an iPod connection and RCA Pioneer can give her a really well balanced and were quite powerful. I do not think you will be disappointed with the music this unit at all.
On the iPod interface / GUI is ok but not great. The interface is very low end. It is functional but I do not think anyone will want it and posted all the time. I can not understand why people are not these a little better. I imagine the costs design would be negligible. I have both an iPhone and an iPod 5th generation. I was not able to get the iPhone to work at all, but I have not tried hard enough. IPod 5th generation worked and the sound was great but I was annoyed you can not use the iPod itself to control materials on the fifth generation units (apparently you can about the new models). This means that I need to turn on the TV to play music from the iPod. So I'll probably use the RCA connections for most of the former use (though lower quality) just to avoid turning on the TV. If a party or I will play music for a long time I use the digital connection and then turn on the TV to select the playlist, then turn off the TV. Again, no big deal, but annoying.
Summary
If you can not say it now, I really like the Pioneer and I'm pretty satisfied with the purchase. Good points so more trouble with some, but not Showstoppers. Unit runs warm but not too hot. I could still put my hand on top after five hours away. There are many entries, lot of flexibility to configure the input, many options for decoding video conversion works and scaler is decent (but not much). The sound is perfect - do not worry about the weight. I highly recommend this product. If you are looking for 1 April with an incredible quality for less than $ 500 is what you need. If you can spend $ 800-1000, then by all means get a Pioneer Elite, but everyone will be very, very happy with this unit.
