I need help recording (Cassette) on a Memorex Model MKS3001?

I can't press the record button on the Karaoke, its like it's stuck, I put the cassette in set the mode to "Tape" and i still can't press the button. Even with the player off, or when i have a Cd playing. Please help me.
Is the protection tab knocked out on the cassette that you are using? in order to preserve a pre-recorded tape, there are plastic tabs you can knock out. You can put tape over them to override the protection. This should not be the case with a brand new cassette.
