what is difference between sonotone cartridges 9ta/hc and 8t4a and are they inter-changeable?
to fit garrard deck at5 in bush record player
The 9TAHC is the later "high compliance" version of the 8T4A and gives a higher output. Both will work in any given setup with the corresponding difference in output. Performance will very much depend on the input circuitry of the amplifier. A higher output cartridge can lead to distortion due to overload or impedance mismatch in some instances. 8T4A is available but prices are around £45. If you are replacing one then the 9TAHC is a better bet or alternatively an Acos GP93/1. For best results you could try getting hold of a Decca DERAM cartridge. If you are electronically minded Practical Wireless did an article in the early 70's "DERAM+Device = delight" which shows you how to make a 2-transistor (per channel) matching circuit for excellent results.
